It depends on what we are doing. When we go camping we always have a campfire with something cooking over it in one of my many different cast iron pots, maybe pinto beans and ham, maybe chili or a big pot of beef stew. Then set a dutch oven or two on the edge of the fire for some Jalapeno Cornbread or biscuits.
Sometimes we go to or near a big city and stay at an RV park in our home on wheels. This is not camping so a campfire is not required. We don't do hotels so this kind of park is ok as well when necessary. Some of these parks allow fires as long as they are not on the ground. I carry a small fireplace and some wood (split oak lumber so I don't get in trouble for transporting firewood) with me. Sometimes we do have a small fire at one of these parks but I always ask my neighbor if it will bother them. If they came here because they do not like fires then I will respect that but if it is a campground with a fire ring then anyone there should expect for campfires to be all around them.
JMO-you mileage may vary.
