Unless you have a very large tent, you are going to be outside most all the time.
With RVs it is almost like living in a house and it seems most people are sitting inside in their recliner with A/C on, watching TV or a movie. And not a good idea for strangers to drop in and join you in your RV.
I agree a lot is lost in the second way of "camping". I love it outside, but I have to admit we are often guilty of the inside thing.
