101 & PCH closed north of Ventura - fire!

A wildfire between Ventura and Carpinteria along the California coast has closed 101 and the Pacific Coast Highway. Residents and campers are under voluntary and mandatory evacuations depending upon location.

The Rincon Parkway and Faria campgrounds and Emma Wood State Beach campground are in this area.

  • Amazing footage on local southern Calif TV news broadcasts -- folks driving right through the flames, catching it all on their cellphone videos. Yikes!
  • There are some very high pressure natural gas lines paralleling the railroad as well
  • Gosh, Tiger, it's too bad you edited that -- I was sure that the town had a new nickname!

There are some very good surf breaks in that area -- it is not easy to surf when hot ash and smoke are blowing across the beach and into the water. (I speak from painful personal experience, having grown up in Malibu in the 1960s.)

Tiger, I like that variation on Carpinteria -- it is a very relaxing place (with gentle waves), so maybe Carp-inertia is its new nickname! ;) Sort of like Leucadia in San Diego County, which is also known as Qua-ludia for the same reason.

Good catch. I edited it to the correct spelling.

Fire is now 10% contained according to fire dept Twitter feeds.

Both highways are closed, as is the rail line. One post said oil lines are at risk. Offshore oil rigs feed into pipelines which run along that narrow corridor between beach and mountains.

All kidding aside, I sure hope they get that fire under control asap.
