Just a thought, I would cross at Nelway go up to Salmo west to Castlegar then back east to Nelson, north up to Ainsworth Hot Springs(very nice hot springs) on to Kaslo then back west to New Denver and north through Nakusp over the Galena Bay ferry and north to Revelstoke. Lamplighter campground in Revelstoke is very nice. Lots to see and do in Revelstoke, good restaurants, hiking, mountain biking, etc. Then east over the Rogers Pass to Golden and back south thru Radium, Fairmont Hot Springs, (a bit pricey but nice hot spring pools) then back south through Cranbrook and south from there to the American border on whatever route you so choose. PM me if you would like any further thoughts or ideas on this route. Very scenic route with lots to see and do along the way.

Where are you planning to re enter the U.S.? Highway 3 is a very scenic drive but don't be in too much of a hurry.

If you find yourself near Cranbrook, forget the commercial CG's near the town, and head south on 95 to Moyie Lake Provincial Park. Very nice and quiet park.

Take a drive up to Radium Hot Springs. The Springs aren't very exciting, just a big heated swimming pool. But the road and surrounding landscape was very nice in my opinion.
