2013 one of coldest Aprils in Alaska in past 74 years!

From the US National Weather Service Alaska facebook page. There's a great graphic that accompanies this text:

April 2013 was among the coldest Aprils in the past 74 years over much of Alaska. Looking back even further, in the eastern Interior this was generally the coldest April since 1924.

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANCHORAGE AK
210 PM AKDT WED MAY 1 2013

ABOVE NORMAL SNOWFALL AND COOLER TEMPERATURES FOR APRIL IN ANCHORAGE

APRIL 2013 WAS THE 6TH SNOWIEST AND 6TH COOLEST APRIL ON RECORD
FOR ANCHORAGE. THE NWS FORECAST OFFICE ON SAND LAKE ROAD RECORDED
16.0 INCHES OF SNOW FOR THE MONTH. THE RECORD FOR APRIL IS 30.8
INCHES IN 2008. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR APRIL WAS 29.6 DEGREES
MAKING IT THE 6TH COOLEST APRIL OVERALL AND THE THIRD COOLEST APRIL
SINCE THE OBSERVING LOCATION WAS MOVED TO NEAR THE AIRPORT. THE
RECORD IS 26.8 DEGREES IN 1972.

THE COOL TEMPERATURES COMBINED WITH THE AMOUNT OF SNOW RECEIVED IN
APRIL HAS LEFT MEASURABLE SNOW FROM THE SEASON ON THE GROUND AS OF
MAY 1ST. THIS HAS ONLY HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN ANCHORAGE SINCE SNOW DEPTH
MEASUREMENTS HAVE BEEN TAKEN. MEASURABLE SNOW DEPTH IS CONSIDERED
WHEN 50 PERCENT OR MORE OF THE OBSERVATION AREA IS COVERED BY AN
AVERAGE OF 5 TENTHS OF AN INCH OR MORE.

  • Anchorage temp (F) for next several days will be in the upper 40s and 50s. Yards are mostly free of snow except for areas in shade or having extra depth like from snowblowing.
  • Today ... 53F on the shady side of the cabin.

The sun is brilliant. Water is running everywhere!
Won't get too optimistic though ... this has happened several times already this spring!
  • Thanks for the info, Sue!
I'll remember to pack my thermals (and my snow scoop) as need to be in Wasilla by Memorial Day weekend.

We just had 3" of snow last night here in the Husker Nation. Our April was also one of the coldest on record. However, with the colder temps also came an increase in precipitation so we are not complaining...much! We continue to be in drought conditions due to a severe lack of rain from last year.

Looking forward to your beautiful country (Yukon) even if it is still in winter wonderland conditions! Or has spring arrived?

So what does that tell us? That it gets cold in Alaska?

Sue is just trying to keep folks that are going to Alaska informed of the weather so if you are not interested then you might just skip the topic and move on without comment. To us that are traveling to AK this year I for one APPRECIATE Sue and others keeping us informed.

    Thanks for the info Sue!!!!!

I realize that one year of colder/snowier is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, but I never believed the global warming "caused by man" theory. Virtually all the first Earth Day prognostications never happened, either, but our fearless leaders certainly made Govt. policy based on them.

    We are.

And at an alarming rate. :(
