We feel that if you can make this trip, you can do anything. We did so many things that we had not tried before. We had only had previous opportunities to stay in state parks. On this trip, we overnighted in a Wal-Mart, a BLM campground, a National Forest Service Campground, a national park, a turn out on the Alaska highway, and military campgrounds. We had never dry camped much before but we found out we really like it and will be doing more of it. We stopped for lunch at some of the prettiest places.
Just a report on mosquitos. They were really only bad in the Fairbanks area and at the BLM campground we stayed at on the way to Valdez. Otherwise, they were not bad.
It does stay pretty light the farther north you go. We did not have any issues sleeping at all and made no special accommodations for sleep. By the time you head south at the end of the summer, it does get dark during the night.
