We drove a variety of RVs north many times before moving here. We figured why keep paying to vacation here when we could simply live here and enjoy the North year round. Love it! Although I was born here, so it was just a matter of returning home for me.
In all our RV trips and tens of thousands of miles on the highways and gravel back roads, we had minimal damage. On the Class C, the window in the overhead bunk area got broken by a rock tossed by a semi-truck on its climb up from the Donjek River in December 2001 so the drive became a bit chilly. But some plywood and duct tape fixed that until we got home to Vancouver Island.
And some flat tires one year, the year we used a camper on the truck and drove to Inuvik. Maybe too much weight on all the gravel & shale roads. Maybe the tires were getting old. Who knows?
We tend to avoid commercial campgrounds. The north is just too grand for us to want to stay in any type of parking lot. Can't imagine camping at any store. There is so much area to enjoy and listen to the silence by a campfire. As tourists here, we rarely stayed in a city overnight, usually just long enough to grocery shop and resupply.
Thus, we usually drycamp. No big deal, do it all the time. Not sure why we would need hook-ups when we're quite comfy camping without. Many gas stations up here have places to dump the tanks and fill with water.
The best sights are off the beaten path -- away from all the tourists :B
