My wife and I just did a trip from San Diego to New Orleans to Louisville and back to San Diego. We do not have kids yet, one of the way. I found out 500 mile days for me are no problem and we did a few 700+ mile days just to get there. From New Orleans to Louisville was 730 and it just made sense to push on though and get there. Same coming back home from Arkansas to New Mexico.
I know kids will though a massive monkey wrench into things but 5-700 miles per day is doable and gets you extra days at your stops.
