3.4 Miles per Dollar

One statistic we like to calculate is how many miles we can go on a dollar's worth of diesel. We got 3.4 MP$ on our 8-week, 7100 mile trip (mid-May to mid-July) starting and ending in Washington state. (Liters and Canadian dollars were converted to gallons and USD.)

We've been happy with 3.1 MP$ in the lower 48 where we sometimes go 70-75 MPH. This time we babied the fuel pedal and got 15.1 MPG. I'm all for saving 10% on a $2100 fuel bill!

None of this includes the Alaska ferry travel but we did put on 450 camper miles at our 5 layovers.

  • We're being gouged on fuel prices. With oil closing at 93.46/bbl. today, gas should be below $2.00/gal and diesel not much higher. They do it because they
can. If we want to travel, we have to have it and they know that. Greed is getting worse every day in our nation.
  • My northern trip (12330 km or 7662 miles ) ended up costing $0.26/km ($0.418/mile or 2.39 MP$).
With diesel as cheap as $3.12/ US gallon in Fairbanks to as high as $1.75/L ($6.62/US gallon) at Eagle plains on the Dempster. I did NOT get fuel in Inuvik at $1.869/L. ($7.07/ US gallon).
Average fuel consumption was 18.33L/100km (12.83 mpg)
At the start of the trip was only getting 11.5 mpg, but as I slowed down we got as high as 15.5 mpg.
All fuel calculations were hand calculated.
  • This summer's trip that started in May. My fuel cost has been 0.371¢ a mile so far. Or 2.695 miles for each $1
    Or 10.11 MPG
  • With the price I am paying for fuel now, I figure that it is costing me 47 cents per mile.
  • Never thought of it that way.

    I get 2.23 miles per dollar - 5.2L Gas :(:o:E
