From what we were told, when we spent 5 days in Ouray, the pools are clothing optional. Skinny dipping is common
Someone's pulling a fast one on you. We've been there many times and it's definitely not clothing optional. It's right on town next to the highway. Shh! Don't tell anyone, but we like the Ouray pool better than either of the options here in Glenwood Springs (not that they're not pretty special, too).
OP: After being in southern Utah, Garden of the Gods will seem pretty insignificant.
From Durango to Ouray, you have two choices:
US 550 through Silverton. Many balk at taking an RV over this road, although many large rigs do it every year. But if mountain driving isn't your forte, then:
Take US 160 east to CO 145, north past Telluride to Placerville and right on CO 62 to Ridgway, then south on US 550 to Ouray.
Either route is beautiful. But if you do the Telluride route, please take the train to Silverton out of Durango one day or at least drive to Silverton for a day trip. US 550 is a road not to be missed.
