OK, as I have spent a lot of time in the area, I have definite preferences:
1. Vegas can actually be a hoot for kids. Circus Circus Circus Circus Circus is a very convenient RV Park RV Park. Not exactly cheap but hey, Vegas. Be a desert rat--sleep late, stay up late. Walk the Strip at night. Take the Deuce bus to the Luxor (that's a fun place to just walk around). Eat at the Circus Circus buffet buffet--it's cheaper than food!
2. Add a day to Durango. Spend a day taking the choo choo to Silverton. A totally fun must trip, and the kids will LOVE it. The next day, not only should you dunk yourselves in the hot pools, but you should also visit Box Canyon Falls park, just above Ouray, south on 550.
3. The route you suggest, US 50 over Monarch Pass, works well--it's a good road, nice scenery, and plenty of interesting places to visit on the east side of the divide. But before you do that, visit Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Right on your route.
This is the exact re-affirmation I needed! I'll have to review the Powell vs. Vegas idea with the wife and kids. Vegas changes up the trip a little, which will be nice I'm sure.
I'm not sold on the Silverton/Durango Train, as its a long haul, and since we are strapped in the truck so much, not sure being strapped in the train all day will bode too well.
Gunnison will definitely be a quick visit as we drive by.
