OP: After being in southern Utah, Garden of the Gods will seem pretty insignificant.
From Durango to Ouray, you have two choices:
US 550 through Silverton. Many balk at taking an RV over this road, although many large rigs do it every year. But if mountain driving isn't your forte, then:
Take US 160 east to CO 145, north past Telluride to Placerville and right on CO 62 to Ridgway, then south on US 550 to Ouray.
Either route is beautiful. But if you do the Telluride route, please take the train to Silverton out of Durango one day or at least drive to Silverton for a day trip. US 550 is a road not to be missed.
Thank you Ken!
I have no issue with driving the mountains...I'm hopeful my deisel does okay pulling the 40' fifth wheel.
Is US550 up and down a lot? Or just curvy? Will I have any issues with being ~56 total feet long?
And what about the route from Ouray to Salida? Is US50 okay for us?
Leaving for Kentucky from Salida as opposed to Colorado Springs adds about 2-hrs to the long drive. But that's something we'll deal with!
