40 from Asheville NC to Pigeon Forge?

Anything we should know before taking this route? Thanks
  • It is curvy, it goes through the mountains, it has 55 mph speeds or sometimes less, it occasionally has lanes closures because of slides.........BUT, it is an interstate highway and is used constantly by all types of vehicles. Just pay attention to the suggested speeds, not just the speed limit and you should be fine.
  • Allow plenty of time. It's curvy with some grades but nothing major. Many RVers and semi trucks use that section. We have driven it many times in our 34' Class A towing a small pickup.
  • You can save a few miles and minutes by taking US 411 from exit 432A at Newport, TN. 411 will take you to Sevierville, then follow the signs to 441 and Pigeon Forge.
  • I-40 doesn't go all the way to Pigeon Forge. Take exit 407 southbound and stay on it all the way to Pigeon Forge. The state route numbers change every time the road enters a new county, so just stay on the main road.

Unless you are going on the weekend or a busy holiday, then use the information above about 411 out of Newport or use 321 if you are going to Gatlinburg.

Where are you staying in PF?
  • Did that route a couple weeks ago. If you are used to western mountain passes this is a piece of cake. Pretty drive.
