550 between Ouray, Silverton, and Durango

My inlaws just returned from a trip through this area in a car. This area is on my short list of vacations in the next few years. The pictures look as if this would be a very tough trip in a fifth wheel. Am I right? Those who have traveled this, how was your experience? My father-in-law doesn't remember seeing many (if any) RVs on his trip through.

  • FWIW, UPS and other carriers send their semis over 550 every day, weather permitting.
  • That 'Most Dangerous Roads' series has a lot of hogwash in it. For example the Moki Dugway along with 550. Now I would not take a large RV up the Moki but we inadvertently took a popup up it before we'd even heard of it. But neither road is especially dangerous unless driven by an idiot.

Everyone is different, regarding the drive so I'll advise that you drive it in the Toad first - one so you can see it and two so you know if you want to take the RV.

Without a doubt it is one of the Reasons we RV - LOVE IT - but others hate it - so just use common sense, enjoy the area and be safe.

    Best of Luck,
  • As long as you keep your eyes on the road and not the scenery it isn't a problem. Speed limit is mostly 25-30. Some hair pin turns yes, some steep grades yes, no guardrail in stretches yes, one of the most beautiful roads you will ever drive on yes, problem no.

Agree, although I left the TT in Ouray. Used Ouray as a base camp to go four wheeling on the trails.

  • It is a very good road (at least in the summer). I wouldn't have second thoughts towing my 5er and boat on that route. You should be fine with a truck/trailer.
  • Nah, thousands do it every year. We've done it, big Class A's have videos doing it up on YouTube. It's all in the head of the driver, if they believe they cannot do it then they won't.
