89A from Sedona to Prescott?

How bad is this route? Will we be on the inside or outside? Are there guardrails? Unfortunately, we goofed in our planning & only have 1 day for the area. We also hope to hit the Sharlott Hall museum in Prescott & are staying in Camp Verde . Thanks for your advice.

  • We pulled a 24 ft trailer from Williams to Cottonwood. I'm glad we were going downhill instead of up. It looked a little intimidating at times but we didn't have any problems. My wife video taped some of it.It is a beautiful drive. Dead Horse Ranch HP is a nice place to stay. While there we visited Tuzigoot, Jerome and Ft Verde.
  • Without an RV the road is fine. About 12 miles is turn after turn through scenic mountains. Some are 15-20mph turns and the signs saying so are accurate. The highway is a very well traveled popular route with a few scenic vistas along the way. All good road with guardrails.

Stop off in Jerome, walk around the fun shops, wineries and have lunch at Haunted Hamburger or Grapes. Both excellent! Parking in town is often difficult on the weekends if arriving midday. Usually have to park in lot on lowest level of town and use the stair walkways between streets.

Forgot to say WITHOUT the RV!

If you're doing this without the rv, you will be fine. Tight twisty road, but fun and scenic. We stopped in Jerome but were not impressed.
  • As long as you take the toad it's a beautiful drive. Jerome is tight and can have lots of people wondering around. Several tasting rooms and restaurants there. Prescott is also very busy with people so parking is tight but doable down by the town square. X2 on Deadhorse SP, one of our favorite parks around the Cottonwood area. Zane grey is not bad either but further from town.

  • This is a very tight stretch of road and RV's in general are not recommended. If you are well under 30' overall it is doable. The road up to Jerome out of Cottonwood is similar. If you have a Toad, Dead Horse Ranch SP is a great location {in Cottonwood}, too spend the night and explore Sedona, 89A, Jerome, Cottonwood and don't miss the Tuzigoot ruins.

  • Not a good choice for a long A, trailer/5er. Ok for a C or B. Going through Cottonwood and Jerome is tight and twisty 2 lane.

The several sharp hairpin curves of 10-20 mph and steep grades.

Best thing to do is use google maps and zoom down in SAT VIEW until you see cars and trucks on the road and walk it from Sedona to Prescott...
