Goodness, that's a lot to chew on and respond to. Thanks to all.
Some thoughts after reading:
- I realize that a power trip isn't anyone's preference. However, as a working family with a short window before the kids move out, we don't have the options that some may have. Reality is, I can't count on ever getting back out there, and this trip will be a careful balance between power trip and leisure. We have leisure trips all the time locally, and this trip is of a different nature.
That said, this will be one of the critical purposes of this thread. Let's work together to get just the right blend. :) Yes, it will have to be a blend.
- littlemo, I was thinking the same thing. Our boys are as good as it comes for travelling. If we had sections that we need to "make time", they would cope as well as we would.
I was thinking that the stretch from home to Albequrque is 1550 miles with not alot in between. I know noone likes it, but we could do in 3 days of 517 miles per day. Knowing that will buy us a rest when we get there!
Similar for the stretch home from Denver, 1490 miles or , 3 days of 497 miles.
So, 6 unpleasant days. What are you going to do? But that leaves us with 36 days to make the loop of parks in NM, Ar, Ut and Co. Surely that's enough to spend the necessary time to enjoy each one? But then, that's another purpose of this thread. We'll find out.
- naturist, too funny, I know that photo is useless. I hope that in the next few days I learn to post more useful maps. For now, please copy and paste the link I provided and you can see all the details.
- C-172, I'm going to pick up an actual paper map this week (go figure) and we are going to hang it on a wall in the house to use as a pin cushion to work out the trip with the boys. It is important that this is an educational experience, so we will take the time to research all the possibilities as a family. You are correct, if we're following "their" plan, they will be far more tuned in.
Keep throwing darts fellas. :)
