Though it appears you plan on running I-70 across Colorado if by chance your travel planing should later take you along route 50 through Colorado you might check out
Bent's Old Fort near La Junta. It is a magnificant reconstruction of the original Fort built in 1833 along the Santa Fe Trail. But unfortunately the NPS web site does not have any view of the Fort even remotely likely to draw anybody there. Thus I used the Wikipedia link above. I'm pretty sure kids love old Forts and this one should not be missed. This "kid" sure loved it.
