Poor choice of wording on my part. More clearly, it is a welcomed benefit, not a motivation. At age 43 with a mortgage and family, I spent 2 years going back to get a masters degree, spending $30k in tuition while my family lived on savings. Yes, it was motivated by more than a 6 week vacation. :) My heart is right where it should be regarding my career and need not be questioned. Although, I understand why you asked. EDIT: I forgot to mention the 50% paycut.
Yes, the "perfect" family trip will be full of flaws. We've had enough of those already to know that we have almost always looked back and had a good laugh. :D
