I will likely shorten Mesa Verde to two nights max.
I've had others say to be sure to do the train both ways. What is your thinking?
I've been hearing great things about Gunnison. As for staying in town, we actually prefer less amenities and more nature. I'm thinking we're inclined to stay in the park.
I will most definitely want more info on the Buena Vista and CS areas. Might be a bit before I get to the details on that point of the trip, but I'll remember to ask you. Thanks for the tip on Cheyenne Mountain State Park.
The thing about the train both ways is that it makes a very long day. Also the trip back to Durango is somewhat anti-climatic after the spectacular views on the way up to Silverton. We have done it both ways, and even once got off the train at Needleton to hit the trail up to Chicago Basin in the Wemenuche Wilderness.
Some views of one of our trips
I still think the bigger question is whether to take the US 550 route between Silverton and Ouray. Some are quite confident about towing this segment, but others are not. After you have decided about that I may have some additional suggestions. There are a couple of alternatives.
Please feel free to send me a PM if you have questions about the Colorado portion of your trip.
