Bikes -- depends on how easy they are to get on and off, and whether they block access to the back of your tow vehicle. If it is a hassle to get to the cargo, you will soon find them annoying.

On the other hand, we use them a lot for recreation -- mountain bikes are allowed on fire roads throughout the west. Great way to see the countryside. Not so good inside national parks -- they are restricted to the pavement.
