Just my personal opinion, but I would not do this. I would think there are far more opportunities for you family at Colorado Springs than at the Black Canyon. But I have to admit, we have never stayed out at the canyon. We have stayed many times in Gunnison and Ouray.
As to Rocky Mountain: Yes, that would be a good use of extra time. Far less road miles than to Yellowstone. Glacier would add even more travel. On the other hand, Estes Park is an easy drive up from Colorado Springs. Just be sure to check the roads because of the terrible flood damage from last year.
