The informal economy exists due to the lack of a real social safety net. In order to feed their families people are forced to become street vendors. Many are uneducated and may have some type of disability. Often the husband is employed but the wages are under 100 pesos a day. So the wife has to be a secondary wage earner. I admire their entrepreneurship and salute them for being proactive and looking after their families.
