Then the southern route is the way for you to go, avoid more than a dip into CO, Mesa Verde from UT is OK.
Maybe they changed the ticketing for Kartchner Caverns (it's on our todo list) but last time I checked they had limited access and you had to make reservations well in advanced. Not the case for Carlsbad, you can enter any time on the self guided tour and they have many other guided tours during the day that you can sign up for. I suggest one of the guided tours since this will be your first visit.
This for the AZ park website:
"Any tickets not reserved in advance will be sold at the park on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the tour. These tickets generally sell out early and quickly. There is no guarantee there will be any first-come, first-served, unreserved tickets available on any given day."
Also in the same theme if you decide to do Mesa Verde make reservations online a week or so ahead of time. They started a new system of taking reservations and you could get to the park and find only a few tours available.
