Jacob Lake is 45 miles from the North Rim.
I know we've camped there but it's closer to Vermillion Cliffs and House Rock Rd., and it's the only place with FHU in the area. They aren't going there anyway. I find it strange but there is a irreconcilable difference between the people who like the North Rim and those who like the South Rim. One side likes the fact that there are 1/10th the number of people than there are at the South Rim. And the fact that you can easily get away from even those people by driving out to some of the other overlooks. I don't recall ever seeing more than one or two other cars parked at Cape Royal for example.
And the South Rim people prefer the charms of that side of the park. Apparently it is something like truck brand loyalty...heh. I haven't camped at the South Rim in decades so I admit that I'm probably out of date on the conditions there. But all I remember we the mobs of people, like YNP or Yosemite, and the crass commercialism.
If nothing else the North Rim is much more convenient to the other places that we have been going to. Up in Utah and in Colorado.
The south is closer to the AZ parks and we've been to most of them. But I recall feeling close to heat stroke at Walnut Canyon on the trails and the same at some other localities down there. When we're out there is June and July mostly and if we were there in September/October we might feel differently.
