Agesilaus: For the Kartchner Cave tours there are always unsold reservation tickets that walk ins try to get the same day. These are the ones that go fast.
Today is Sunday and I just plugged in Tuesday for a tour. There are 14 tours available. Therefore, you don't need far out reservations except perhaps on holidays.
No, you can't just walk into the cave willy-nilly. That would promote damage. When you take the tour you'll see why. It's a very special place, tightly controlled with temperature and humidity. There are small groups on the tour and you're given personalized attention. When you learn the background of this cave you'll be amazed at how long the discoverers kept the cave a secret until they got the state park to purchase and manage the property before it got vandalized. They knew they found something that could never be replaced. The dripping formations and lighting are gorgeous - nothing like it; not even Carlsbad NP.
I hope anyone passing through the area will see this beauty!
