You can do Kasha-Katuwe (Tent Rocks) from either Albuquerque or Santa Fe - not much difference.
From Santa Fe go to Bandelier Nat'l Monument. The kids (& you) will enjoy climbing the tall ladders to the ruins.
On the way to Durango, stop in Pagosa Springs for a nice relaxing couple hours in the hot springs. There's either a large regular pool - nice and warm or individual concrete springs of varying temperatures.
Durango - you mentioned the train but talked like the kids wouldn't be interested. If that's a given, then skip it as it's expensive for a family, and instead, rent a Jeep and drive some of the Silverton trails. They are absolute awesome. If you do take the train, take it up and the bus on the return. Once there you'll only have time for a quick lunch and walking the short Main St. and shops. You could do that with your Jeep rental.
There's also a nice hot springs pool in Ouray, just north of Silverton.
There's a nice raft trip down the river in Durango.
Also, just north of Durango before Silverton is a ski area along the highway with lots of kids' activities in the summer. They'd like the chairlift and other things.
