Another really interesting mountain bike trail west of Durango is Sand Canyon. It's located in the Canyons of the Ancients NM. About 8 miles round trip. What makes it unique are the numbers of cliff dwellings and other ruins along the trail. Information When you get to the steep uphill switchbacks, turn around. The trailhead is on County Road G, just over 2.5 miles south of where US 160 and US 491 meet. It's then 12.5 miles to the parking area, which is on slickrock. Lots of slickrock to ride at the beginning, then more singletrack when you get near the ruins. Pictures and description. Please stay on the trail so it remains open to mountain bikes.
