Re: Austin to Carlsbad...Google maps shows it's almost the same time to take 87 to 176, north of Midland, as opposed to I10. Which is best for avoiding grades, while also being more interesting scenery, if that's possible? I enjoy travelling back roads, I feel like I see more of the country that way, but have to balance out the fact that it sometimes means more stop and go driving, so more wear and tear on the brakes and drivetrain. Also much higher possibility of getting lost or just a wrong turn that can be a hassle in a big rig.
