Alabama to Oregon

We are leaving Alabama and going to Oregon pulling a 40 ft fifth wheel with a dually. We are looking for advice on a good route. I-10, I-20 or I-40. Has anyone driven 395 north of Vegas? Any hints on missing the congested cities?

we are heading north about June 20th. will be spending time on coast where will you be in central
  • June were at LaPine state park about 25 miles south of Bend. July were headed farther east.
If your going to visit the coast, plan to start at FtStevens state park near Astoria. Plan a couple of days there, then move south, no more than 50-60 miles at a time. There are so many interesting places to see and do 50 miles can make for a completely different experience. Of course in June the coast will still be cool and damp. If you want dry and warm, come east.
  • last year we started June 20th. got to K-Falls to see daughter. wanted to go north, but the temps were all very hot. ended up going to coast. we will be coming to K-Falls again on 20th, maybe look at LaPine for a week.
is there anyplace there to go kayaking
  • The park is on the Deschutes river. Not a white water type river, at least not near the park. There are some class 3-4 rapids a bit north closer to Bend. Lots of hiking, caves to explore great museum near Bend.
PM me if you want more ideas.
  • I took I-10 to Texas then up through the panhandle and continued. Your choice, a lot to see, be safe and have fun. God Bless.
  • 395 is an absolutely beautiful drive for RVers. However, best to check the weather before beginning.
  • I agree with those who say to stay south (I-10) until California and then go up I-5 to Oregon. That puts you over just one serious mountain pass at the CA/OR border and avoids most of the bad stuff that can happen along a cold weather route. Believe me - been there and done that. Have witnessed fatalities caused by loss of control over icy overpasses and bridges; once while sliding along myself without much control on an I-40 overpass. Believe it when the sign says something like "bridge freezes before roadway".
  • X2 with 2gypsies. Have driven the 395 both ways several times and love it. Will be doing it again this summer. Weather is always an issue.
