Alaska camping in early May

We will be in Alaska on May 7, 2014 for 2 weeks. We will be flying in but want to rent a small RV as we have on other visits to Anchorage. But, will campgrounds be open that early in the season? Will it be difficult to find hook-ups in the Kenai peninsula or up near Talkeetna? Also, how cold can we expect it to be?
  • We traveled in Yukon mid may. It was not very warm, in the 50, snow on the ground and we got a good snow storm in Fort Nelson. We where in Carcroos around 20 May, it was cool and not many campers, we stayed at the CG and then boonduck by a lake. In skagway on 24 of may and the CG where open in town. We then moved to Haines by ferry and went to Haines Junction, there was snow on the top of the pass. The Kluane Lake was 3/4 ice when we went through in late may. Most of the time we camped by the side of the road, the CG where open with very few campers.

    Sounds perfect!
  • This will be our 4th year going to Anchorage at the end of April with the RV for the state championship swim meet with DS. Only RV park open is the Golden Nugget. They have year round campers. Not much to look at when it is covered with snow, but the showers are very clean and they have full hook ups. There isn't much snow in Anchorage this winter, most likely be long gone by May. Most state and federal campgrounds open Memorial Day weekend. When the snow is gone many of them allow camping free of charge until then, but no hook ups.
