Alaska Cruise and Rent RV

We are booked to take a 7 night Northbound Alaska curise which departs Vancouver on May 26, 2014 and ends in Whittier on June 2nd, with stops in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway along the way. We are contemplating renting an RV when we get off the cruise in WHittier, most likely out of Anchorage (once I figure out how to get us from the dock to Anchorage). I would like to spend a week in the RV and see as much as I can, Denali for sure. Several questions - has anyone done this, see any pluses or downside with the idea; what side trips/excursions would you recommend on the 3 cruise stops; recommendation for the best, translated reasonably priced RV rental place; recommendations for the one week we will ahve with the RV other then Denali. Thanks in advance for your input. Ron S
  • Whittier to Anchorage is about an hour, depending where in Anchorage and depending how you hit the tunnel schedule. Depending how long you rent an RV for, your RV rental company might be willing to pick you up in Whittier.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions. As far as getting away from the dock to Anchorage, you would think that would be pre-arranged by the cruise line, but I don't think that is the case. We will use some of the suggestions/links and reserve a shuttle spot. Thanks again.
  • I really wouldn't think the cruise would just dump you on the dock in Whittier?? Most passengers would be flying back home and would need to get to Anchorage anyway. That would require a cruise arranged shuttle from Whittier to Anchorage.
  • Just a week in the RV? Can you stretch it a few more days?
  • For tour stops:
In Ketchikan, we wandered around town one time and on the second, we did a flight seeing trip over Misty Fjords with Family air tours.Excellent trip, excellent pilot, and worth the money.
In Juneau, our first trip we chartered a boat and went to Tracy Arm. We found a charter fishing guy who was willing to do a non-fishing tour (search juneau boat charter). It was expensive but we were the only people on the boat and the only people at the glacier, where we had lunch. Our second trip we went to Mendenhall Glacier and did a whale watching trip with Harv and Marv. They fit 5 people on the boat, not the usual 50-200. It was an amazing trip.
In Skagway, our first trip we wandered around town. Our second trip we rented a car and drove up to Emerald Lake. The car rental was about $100 for the day and the trip was wonderful. We got to see some of the area, some bears, and Emerald Lake. Often, people take the railroad trip which I have heard is really good, but I hate crowds.

When we arrived in Whittier, we took a shuttle to Anchorage that went to portage glacier and the like. It took longer, but it was interesting. We rented an SUV in Anchorage and returned to the Kenai peninsula where we wandered around for a few days: Home, Seward, Cooper Landing. All are nice and worth spending time in.

Enjoy your trip! We loved Alaska so much on our previous trips we are now returning for the entire summer.

has Whittier to Anchorage shuttle with or without tourist stops. Reasonable price.
  • Yes, Very doable, IMHO.

Here's some of what I have on our Alaska Adventures.

We have flown up 3 times, twice we have been able to do a little camping. Got to do some sightseeing each time. A neat place to see. Even spend two nights camping at Whittier on one trip.
  • Great Alaskan Holidays in Anchorage is the best rental company in my opinion. Great customer service!! They might have suggestions on transportation. We rented a Class C from them a few years ago and spent 12 wonderful days in Alaska!! http://www.greatalaskanholidays.com/index_Alaska_RV_Rental.html?gclid=COqiwIbbl7wCFelZ7AodmUcAkw
  • Thanks for those links - solves one of my problems - the folks at Orbitz where I booked the cruise weren't being very helpful on that part.
