When we went one year we had ample time at their scheduled stops to get off and tour for a few hours especially plenty of time at Ketchican to walk the town and check out the totems and at Juneau to take a bus to Mendanhall Glacier. You don't have to take your RV off and on. There was no extra charge except for the bus ride. The busses were parked at the ferry dock ready to go and the ferry passengers were their objective. They have it timed right so they'll get you back to the ferry in time.
Also, if you don't get a cabin you don't have to sleep outside. There are plenty of comfy lounge chairs inside out of any bad weather.
Driving up and taking the ferry are two completely different experiences. We did both in different years and are glad we did.
