Alaska or Not?

You're not going to be in wilderness with your 45' MH and cycle unless you're a strong distance hiker. The only communication you should have with custom crossings should be 'yes' or 'no' and look them in the eye. That's all they want to hear unless they ask you more questions. Don't try to question their laws. You definitely don't need 'protection'.

We drove our 40' and towed the Jeep and didn't have any damage to either. You're not going to drive fast and sometimes it will be 15mph in construction areas. Driving slow is the key to not receiving damage.

I went to the site you mentioned here but found nothing about protection from animals. It looks like you can bring a gun for hunting or competition and that's it. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks, you and I are on the same page! It is better to be prepared and not need it than be unprepared and regret it for the rest of your life which could incidentally be unexpectedly shortened:)

It is a wonder that any of the millions of Canadians who travel
the west, The Yukon and yes, even Alaska,
without a gun have survived at all!

Just got back from alaska. No joke about 100 miles taking 4 hours. The road from beaver creek to Haines jct in the yukon is pretty beat up, we averaged 25-30 mph on that segment. With your setup just take it slow. The potholes and frost heaves can really shake things up. The road construction will slow you down a lot too.

One thing is to get fuel in Fort Nelson. Fuel between ft nelson and Watson lake is expensive (> $1.60 PER LITER).

Have fun and enjoy Canada. It is a fun place. Just remember no fruit, vegi or taters at either border (US or Canada).

I agree that we are probably safe without it; however, I also believe that I would rather have one and not need it, than to need one and not have it.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I crossed into Canada with all the questions about firearms ,parts, etc then when coming into I see a sign pointing to a gun club off to the right! Then I see all these signs cautioning about wildlife and see they are shot full of holes! I guess the Americans are firing over the border and hitting these signs. I didn't realize we were that good of a shot!

Anyone who needs or feels a want for a firearm in Canada, PLEASE call the RCMP first. Looks like traditional cowboy things are permitted, other newer things not so much, but I have never tried their system. If I need a gun in Alaska, I would mail it to myself, having permanent mailing addresses in both Alaska and WA locations. Or just buy one in Alaska.

Having lived in Alaska or traveled to or from by road since 1969, I have never seen a need for lethal protection in Canada or Alaska rural or wild areas. Your experience may differ. On the other hand, if you only want to go to urban areas, protection may be warranted.

Alaska is worth the trip, by road or air or ship If you need the lethal protection consider a flight or a cruise and rent a motorhome for the tour. The best protection is avoiding dangerous areas, like the all-night market at 2:30 am in the obviously seedy neighborhood, or the recent moose kill on the nifty trail, or closely mingling with the bears fishing for or eating salmon.

Further, shooting at wildlife without the proper tag or hunting licence will cause some grief even if the reason is self-protection.

In Yukon, shooting a bear without a tag (which can't be had without a hunting licence) and out-of-season means taking the time to report it and turn over the carcass to the authorities. And they'll want to be sure the bear was threatening, not just giving you the evil eye while strolling by. The bureaucracy of the process will mean a longer stay in Canada. If you don't report it and the carcass is discovered it will prompt a broader investigation.

On both sides of the border it is a serious matter to shoot/kill without the proper paperwork in place.

12 gauge with 3" rifled slugs , right behind .338 Winchester Magnum and .375 H&H Magnum, as recommended here . And much easier to handle and more versatile, in my opinion.
Despite this link, it is ALWAYS better to avoid dangerous situations than to try to get out of them.
