Alberta Route Question for my Canadian Friends

We will be entering Canada from Shelby, MT, catching Highway 2 at Fort Macleod. Just south of Calgary, route 2A splits off from Highway 2. I want to go around the city, I was thinking of taking 2A to 22X west to 22N to Cochrane, then 22N up to Mayerthrope.

Will I have a problems with this route? We will be coming back down the Ice Fields on our return trip so we will see that then.

Thanks!

  • Well if you would like to drive through the foothills of the mountains, than you could catch 501 which is just north of the Sweetgrass/Coutts crossing. Take that over to #2, turn north(right) and go through Cardston to # 5 and turn left(west. You will drive by the gate to Waterton National Park and then you will be on #6. In a couple of miles there is Waterton Springs Campground, where we have stayed many times over the years. Keep going on #6 up to and through Pincher Creek to #3. Turn left(west) and go to #22(The Cowboy Highway) and turn right. It will take you up north to Cochrane. You will go through Longview & then Black Diamond, Bragg Creek and then Cochrane. It's a good 2 lane highway and we've never run into heavy traffic or the high winds that mat or may not come up. Beautiful scenery. We traveled it with a 35 ft 5th wheel and we were out there last summer for 3 months. Something to ponder on.
