Albuquerque to Carlsbad Caverns -Best Route for RV with tow

We are headed to Carlsbad Caverns tomorrow. We are about 45 miles south of Albuquerque now. We were originally planning on going around El Paso then north. Is there a better way that would work for...

We went from Albuquerque to Carlsbad last June towing the 5er. We took US 380 from I-25 just south of Socoro to Roswell, then south on US 285 to Carlsbad. Actually we took a slight detour off US 380 to Ruidoso and spent a few nights before taking US 70 east to merge back with US 380 and on go Roswell. No problems with an RV on that route.
Stayed at the KOA north of Carlsbad. Only decent RV park we could find in the area.
