I always used to call the relevant road since (and this will date me) many of the folks I grew up listening to had worked on the ALCAN.
...and the ALCAN was presented as the litmus test: "Put tires on that are good enough to drive down the ALCAN." (notice that I said "down"....where did I grow up? :))
That being said, I can still vividly recall my first trip on the relevant road when I bought a milepost at age 16 (It wasn't thick enough then to be capitalized :) ) and looked at the maps: I saw the Alaska Highway, the Cassiar, various Provincial Route X's....but no ALCAN. Alors!
Much as I think the romance and mysticism is lost, the road is the Alaska Highway. :(
