Just made this trip last month from Betty's in Abbeville heading west. No problem driving 50-55 MPH on LA 82. Ferry at Cameron was really no problem. We dragged hitch due to my long overhang on Class C ever so slightly getting on - no problem getting off. Easy drive - - much better than driving I-10 in western LA IMHO.
LA 14 takes you east from Abbeville to pickup US 90 just before you get to New Iberia - - or continue on LA 14 to New Iberia and pickup LA 182, then south to Jeanerette. Stop at LaJeune's Bakery for some delicious baked goods (entrance is around the side, not in the front). LA 182 parallels US 90 and you can hop back on 90 anytime after Jeanerette or continue south to where LA 182 runs into US 90, then continue east to NO.
And YES, staying at Betty's is definitely an experience. We've stayed there 3 times over the years - - always enjoyed our stay - - Betty is a great hostess! Call for reservations. It's a small park and most always full.
