ALT-89 Jerome, AZ accident

Drove from Prescott to Cottonwood, AZ on ALT-89 yesterday in my car. Passed a bad accident involving a rather large class C motor home about 2 miles SW of Jerome. Not sure what happened but appears the motor home hit the mountain side while rounding a turn. The frame looked broken just aft of the cab.

I'm sure many have driven this road with RV's but I gotta ask why? This highway posted MPH is 15-20 on most turns, 30mph on the short straights for a good reason and those speeds are for cars, not RV's. Over the years I've seen numerous RV accidents on this road. Reminds me of the movie RV. Some places large RV's just do not belong!

    Or they blame the road/vehicle/time of day/high school grades anything but the driver.

    I came through that way last year in my 36' motorhome and even went through Jerome on our way to Sedona. It was interesting getting through there but I will know next time to take the main highway into Sedona.

    I believe the signs start over 20 MILES before you get to that section of the road and the legal max length is posted as 40' for trucks, but they say "recommended max length" for RVs. I agree it is NOT the vehicle, but the driver that causes most of the accidents, RV and standard vehicles. We have driven it, but we are very accustomed to mountain driving, so it was no big deal.

    Jerome has a curb as you are leaving town that juts into roadway, on a turn, that makes it impossible to pull a trailer or drive an oversize vehicle through without getting a little left of center.
    On the mountain there are rock edges that come right to the edge of the roadway on pretty narrow lanes. If you are not paying attention or if someone encroaches on your lane you can get in trouble pretty fast.

    The road is posted for RV length. It's definitely not recommended for big RVs, especially driving through Jerome.

    I, too, think some RVers panic on narrow roads. You need to do a little road research in mountain areas.

    Years back, I drove it in a 25 foot class C without any problems. Don't think that I would want to try it in anything larger.

    I drove that mountain before towing my 5ver. It is steep and winding. However, I think the problem is not the road but the driver. There are a lot of drivers out there that shouldn't be driving RVs. Surprised some even have a drivers license. I have been in RV parks where everthing is flat, and they still run into things. I just hope that when I lose my skills, maybe because of age, I'll be able to realize my limitations. All that said, accidents do happen. Even the best and careful drivers run into problems. Sometimes mechanical reasons, Sometimes sucked into accidents due to mistakes of other drivers. JMHO

    It actually is posted, I believe it is 50 Max., and Jerome PD does issue citations to violators.
