we have crossed at North Portal two times and had no problems. Both times it took just a few minutes. If you do cross there, a nice place to spend the nite is in Weyburn, SK. there is a city campground which we stayed at both times. It will be on the left just as you enter the town. We spend two nites there and exchanged money at a bank.
Our route was, from Weyburn, PH39 North up to Moose Jaw and pick up PH !. Then up to Saskatoon, pick up PH 16, which takes you to Edmonton.
When we got to Edmonton there was road construction and we got lost, stopped and there was a guy who took us to the right road PH43.
If you cross at North Portal, just before you cross there is a gas station, on the left, to fuel up at US prices.
We stopped in Lloydminster and spent nite at a WalMart.
