alternate route around Memphis going east/west??

In a week we leave north Alabama headed to Santa Fe and then a 2 week loop thru Utah pulling a 32 foot TT with a pick-up. We basically go 200 miles to Memphis, hang a left on I-40, and go 1000 miles to Santa Fe. I've been dreading Memphis, the trucking duels down I-40 in west Memphis, and the forever road construction delays around Forest city, AR, for some time now.

Anyone found a less white-knuckle route thru this area? I'm actually considering a southern bypass, crossing the Mississippi down at Helena, MS - adds 40 miles but may be worth it.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

  • Memphis alone...I don't understand the issue. Pick a good time, mid-day, and relax. As far as West Memphis going west has always been major truck traffic. If I-40 bothers you that much US-70 to Little Rock is an easy route. At least at North Little Rock/I-440 the truck traffic will lighten. Have traveled all the major cities many times over and never considered Memphis a area of concern.
