I am of the opinion that 77 is worse than the "gorge". The Pigeon River Gorge is not all that bad but you obviously do not like it so why not just cut over at Jacksonville and come straight up I-75? I will guess that you don't want to take the secondary roads either so your choices are limited to 95 or 75.
