Unless your rig is very 'wind worthy' you really want to wait So Cal winds out. Yes, winds tend to get worse as it heats up, but that certainly does not mean that nighttime winds can't be formidable. Frequently 18 wheelers are blown over in these passes. Sounds like you made it thru safely. Either my rig is the worst handling on the road, or far too many RV'ers drive when they shouldn't.
