Anchorage campground

Is there another campground in/near Anchorage besides the Golden Nugget? We stayed there in '08 & have it listed as our worst. We are in Lake McLeese,BC in Kelly's Campground for 2 days of R&R after 4 days of one night stands. Nice site on the lake but like AK the mosquitoes are here. Will stock up on Deet here before entering AK. Thinking about opening up a Deet Store in AK to offset fuel costs.
  • In Canada, the maximum permitted concentration of DEET is 30%, compared to the United States where formulations of 98%+ DEET are still available. Apparently, a 30% concentration of DEET is as effective as a 100% concentration, however it doesn't last as long and requires more frequent application.

DEET can damage plastics so be careful about what you touch after applying it.
  • We lived in Anchorage from 2001-2009. Golden Nugget is unfortunately the best campground in Anchorage unless you happen to have military base privileges. If so, then any of the military campgrounds far exceed anything that Anchorage offers. I would recommend staying in Palmer or Wasilla which are an hour away from Anchorage. Or if you like USFS parks with no hookups, I would suggest the campground down near Portage. I think it is Williwaw Campground. This is south of Anchorage about an hour. Eklutna Lake also offers a nice no hookup campground as well.
  • We are currently at Eagle River, a state park campground, and is about 10 miles north of Anchorage. There are no services, the dump station is currently out of service, a water tank is available with fresh water, there is a 4 day stay limit, and cost is $15.00. It is a real nice park.
