One problem with using the manual lanes on the turnpike that ends in Fla. City is that there are often no humans involved now, so you no longer pay as you go...they photograph your tag as you pass under a series of overhead trestles and mail a bill if you don't have a Sunpass. You pay higher tolls as well. Also can't use the faster Sunpass lanes.
We did that once before getting the portable gadget. Bill took a few weeks and then we had a month to pay IIRC. So if you travel a lot and, like so many do now, handle all your bill paying online, you may not be around when the bill finally shows up via snail mail to your DMV address.
You can buy both types of Sunpass doohickeys after arriving in Florida at Publix grocery and other locations.
