Another Route Question - Angel Fire, NM to Lubbock

Ok, I have one more route question....

One of the last legs of our summer trip is from Angel Fire, NM to Lubbock, TX. The most direct route is via NM-434 to NM-518 to Las Vegas, NM. Any one traveled these roads with a 40 foot 5er recently?

The major highway route would be US-64 East to Cimarron then NM-58 to US-412 east ....

Thought, guidance or suggestions appreciated.

-Chris
  • Has anyone taken 434 recently? The two campgrounds in Angel Fire recommend against it.

I'm thinking about going towards Logan and then up 39 to 412.
  • 434 and 518 take your time ... No problem. There is a State Park we camped in on 434 called Coyote Creek. Small sites but they were filled with 35 foot campers back then.
  • 434 and 518 are winding 2 lanes that I have driven plenty of times you just have to stay on your toes and watch what’s up ahead not much traffic. I have never had any trouble but I also drove semi trucks for over 35 years.. once you hit I 25 I go 84 Lubbock.
  • FWIW, I have yet to be on a road that couldn't handle my 41 footer. When in doubt I consult my Motor Carrier's Atlas. Trucker routes are highlighted. If the route is OK for semi's then it's OK for me.
  • I have been on US 64/NM 58 with my 5th wheel and they are fine. But I personally prefer I-25 to Las Vegas, then US 84 to Clovis to the US 412/US 87 route. And I think it may as fast, although longer, depending on what speed you tow your trailer.

If I recall correctly, NM434 is not suitable for large RVs. I have only been on it driving a car.

We have been on NM58 and US412 in the motorhome and they are fine.

Yup - that was my take.

    Thanks,

  • Street view can be years old. I was standing near the street when a google camera car passed by over 5 years ago. I showed up on Google street view a couple months later and I am still there.

It is a useful tool, but you are wise to ask for info from someone who had been there lately.

    Google maps street view.

Yeah did that and the looks of that is what prompted my question. Some of the views were "old" I was wondering about an update point of view someone other than Google.
