You can still pay cash most everywhere in these states.
The electronic toll collection system is EZ-Pass. You can get (in most cases via mail) a transponder from any of the member states, though they do vary a bit in maintenance fees and discounts (in-state) and other similar details. The transponders do all interoperate with the other EZ-Pass states, so only one account and transponder are needed.
If you'll be taking the New York Thruway much, I might suggest looking into their motorhome plan, which charges you car rates rather than motorhome rates on the Thruway--a substantial savings. New York won't charge a periodic maintenance fee if you meet certain requirements--e-mailed statements rather than snail mail, and signing up for automatic replenishment, I think. (The NY/NJ port authority is a separate entity and they have different plans; sometimes it's easy to get the two confused.)
