Anyone driving Labrador this year?

We are doing it next year and did it in 2013. I believe all of 500 is paved. None of 510 was paved in 2013. Has any of this been paved? Red bay to Happy Valley is what I am asking...south of red bay is paved.

From what I read on the Labrador government highway page, there is no paving planned for 2019...just graveling, widening.

So if anyone is going this route this year, call me curious and fill me in.

  • This couple did it in 2015. Their videos are a little newer than your experience, but they seem to confirm what you saw out there in 2013.

    This was a response to my 2016 query, from a government of NL employee
    "In response to your email requesting road surface condition;

    Ø Route 500 (Boarder in Labrador West to Goose Bay) is asphalt paved - 546 km.

    Ø Route 510 (Goose Bay to L’anse au Clair) is 606 km, of which 160 km is paved and 446km is a well graded gravel surface.

    Ø All of the connecting / access roads have a well graded gravel surface. As an added note, the gravel roads within Labrador are well maintained, wet weather and gravel roads generally don’t provide the ideal driving conditions.

    Diesel fuel / gas is available in Labrador City, Churchill Falls, Goose Bay, Port Hope Simpson ( 383km east of Goose Bay ) and in Red Bay ( 528 km east of Goose Bay ). There are other locations in the various communities located off of Route 510 as well.

    There is no up-dated road condition report available on-line during the summer months ( May – October), however, we do offer Construction Traffic Advisories : http://www.roads.gov.nl.ca/construction/default.stm."

  • Yay, let me know if any of that section is paved or in the works...please!
  • I am doing it on a dirt bike this summer. My understanding is that between Red Bay and Happy Valley Goose Bay there is approximately 350 kms of dirt road.
