OHIP worked well for FIL a few years ago in Alberta - no charge for local ambulance, emergency surgery on two occasions. When MIL moved here we applied for AHC for her and there was a one or two month wait for that. She had a heart attack in that time, took a long ambulance ride to an airport (the free STARS ambulance plane couldn't land on our town airstrip due to bad weather), then an hour flight to the provincial heart center in Edmonton. There was a bill off $6000 for the air ambulance, not covered by OHIP. But Alberta Health Care Insurance eventually took care of it.
