The custom agents don't enforce motor vehicle regs - the weigh scales will though. Also at the safety checks that are set up randomly throughout B.C. Every vehicle is stopped and subject to a safety and paperwork check - they check for overweight vehicles too.
Been there, done that ... at one stop our paperwork wasn't in order for the trailer insurance. We had done our part but apparently the trailer was still registered to a previous owner in Alberta because the paperwork for the transfers wasn't completed correctly a few owners back. We had to park the trailer until the paperwork was sorted out and in order.
At another safety check, I was told one of the running lights on the trailer was burned out, but they let me go without penalty. They checked everything thoroughly to make sure the trailer was loaded correctly and within the tow limits of the truck.
