Athens Tx to Marble Falls Tx

Hi all,
I'll be leaving from Athens,Texas on Thursday heading for Marble Falls. Google maps has me taking 31 south and picking up I-35 in Waco, then getting on 29 east at Georgetown. I was hoping to avoid I-35 if I can without too much loss of time. I'll be towing a 37' 5ver. Suggestions please! Thanks.

  • If you have not been down I-35 lately don't be afraid of it. We have been down I-35 from north of Dallas to Georgetown then 29 over to Burnet to 281 to Marble Falls 3 times since Sept. There is ongoing construction along parts of I-35 but has little impact of traffic flow.
But if you just really want to avoid I-35, the route over to 281 thru Waco is good.
  • Just got back from Fredericksburg last night.Took 35 to/from Geogretown. Its not bad and from Waco 2 state rest stops that are both easy in/out.
  • Being northeast of Dallas, and having to cancel a trip to Athens during the ice storm - wish I was going with you.

I have several friends in the Canyon Lake - San Antonio area - they drive 281 - not 35. I've also driven through Waco on 84 and out to 281.

Much of it is two lane - but the traffic doesn't get bad until Marble Falls itself.

31 is still under construction in downtown Corsicana. The construction area is right past the railroad tracks down just past HEB. Slowly it is getting better. No one scraped a concrete barrier or bend a rim on a curb while heading through in November this year like happened to four rigs last year in our GS group in Corsicana.

I-35 construction in late October was mostly north of Waco, and a bit near Jarrell - nothing to bother you towing through the area even then. As long as there is not an accident.

I just don't like the congestion through Belton and Temple on 35, not bad, just not fun either.

I've driven to/from Canyon Lake, Fredericksbug and Inks Lake via I-35 and 29 from Georgetown to Burnett at least four times in the past two years. Never had any real delays or trouble.

281 is a more leisurely ride though.
  • The above route is good advice as I-35 is under construction in places. Be sure to check the weather as that route can get ice if the temps drop below freezing.
  • you can pick up 84 in Waco and take that to 281 south to Marble falls, i have travel that road and you will not have any problem with your 37'
